Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Art Gallery Exhibition – Katrina Leah Stadler

Katrina started painting in 2014 after a lifetime of not believing she was not particularly creative.  As a long time childbirth educator with an ongoing interest in the inherent creative powers of the feminine on many levels, the subject most dear to her heart is in the depiction of woman and the feminine in her many faces and the different expressions and stages of life. This has been her main exploration to date. You can find the whole body of work on the website, recently she has been exploring landscapes both actual and imaginary ‘soul landscapes’.

Her painting process frequently starts with play of colour and marks on the canvas without a specific intention or end goal. At some point during this play and sometimes after leaving the canvas in view for days or weeks, she begins to see an impression or hint of a figure or shapes emerging. From this abstract start, she goes back in and starts to bring those figures forward and they begin to tell a story.  Often the real story or the message does not really become clear until after the painting is finished and often just the perfect words appear from somewhere, and she recognises “Yes, THIS is what this painting is expressing”.

Her work was displayed at Pumanawa Gallery in The Christchurch Arts Centre in a collaborative exhibition ‘Muses & Madonnas’ with two other women artists , and she is about to embark on Bachelor of Design (Applied Visual Arts) at Ara to grow her vision and skill into new areas

Katrina is an accredited ‘Art of Allowing’ Facilitator which see her facilitating painting workshops for women with a combination of play, intuitive painting and some technique.
