Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Art Gallery Exhibition – Carmen Lye

Carmen Lye’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout New Zealand since 2001. Her expressionist landscapes and abstract pieces combine chaos and order, movement and mood in a way that is balanced and pleasing to the eye. As a graphic designer and photographer, Carmen enjoys creating artwork that reflects her technical learning but evokes emotion and conversation. Originally from Ashburton, Carmen studied fine and applied art in Timaru and then Christchurch in the 90s, winning a Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award for Abstract painting in 2006. “This body of work is based around Christianity and the bible, a subject I have painted since art school, only now I am painting from the viewpoint of a Christian. Here I celebrate creation and study various parts of the bible, aiming to speak to the viewer’s spirit – allowing possibilities and wonderment to enter your mind. I think everyone is searching for the answer to that question “what if there is more out there? Every artist wants to create conversation and thought with their work, which is what I invite, as you journey through my thoughts and feelings that I have translated into art.”

Free entry, open 7 days a week.
