Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Art Gallery Exhibition – Gemma Bell & Billy Dowle

Gemma Bell & Billy Dowle - Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Art Exhibition - Methven Mt Hutt Guide NZ

Billy’s Biography:

I work up the Rakaia Gorge on Redcliffs Station, which runs Merino ewes and Angus cows. Many of the photos on display have been taken at Redcliffs just during my day to day work where I sporadically chuck my camera in the work ute or in my backpack.

The other photos have been taken on Lake Hero Station where I have been lucky enough to help out with a couple of big musters. As somebody who is so passionate about the industry they work in and also lucky enough to have one of the best offices in the world. It is a privilege to be able to display these photos in the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Centre.

Gemma’s Biography:

I’m originally from North Yorkshire, England, and I have lived in New Zealand for over 6 years. This country is now my home, and also where I run a mixed farming business near Mt Hutt with my fiancée Murray. The farm is a continuous source of inspiration for creativity, which is evident in the pieces I have chosen for this exhibition. I have always enjoyed experimenting with photography, yet I believe it is painting which has given me the most challenge, and enjoyment in recent years.

My passion for creating art was nurtured throughout my secondary school years and I went on to study A Level Art for two years whilst at college. During this time I was accepted into the Cleveland College of Art and Design. I used to skip a lot of my other subject classes at college to help my parents on their farm, and I remember realising that I didn’t belong inside a studio, I belonged on the land. So, I decided that studying a degree in the arts was not suited for my life plan, and I went to study food and farming instead.

In 2010 I graduated from Harper Adams University with a Batchelor of Science degree with honours in Agriculture. I’ve worked in the industry both in England and New Zealand since. Throughout my career I have continued to exercise my creativity through capturing my life and surroundings with photography and painting in watercolour, oils and acryli
