Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Art Gallery Exhibition – Jo Gerard

My earliest memory of anything arty is of colouring in the black and white pictures of the Ballantyne’s fashion models in their advertisements in the bright pink covered ‘Auckland Weekly News’, when I was a child at Windwhistle. I boarded at Craighead School where I far preferred music, art and sport to academia! Mick and I married in 1959, raised a family, and we farmed together in the Rakaia Gorge for the next 49 years. We retired to a lifestyle block on Mitcham Road for four years before moving to Methven seven years ago. In 1975 I gained an I.C.S. Diploma in Oils and Watercolour, but did not continue with art until we retired, as Brownies, cake decorating, Liberty shirts and other hobbies filled my spare time.
I joined the Ashburton Society of Arts and attended many classes by great tutors to whom I am so grateful for their inspiration and help. The detail of realism appeals to me and I enjoy painting land and seascapes, flowers and nature. My paintings are of local scenes, places I’ve been to or ideas I’ve experimented with.
This Exhibition is the culmination of the past ten years of my dabbling with the paint brush, and I need more space in my art room! As a fundraiser 25% of all sales will go to the Methven Croquet Club – a game I enjoy immensely.
Thank you all for this opportunity.
