Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Art Gallery Exhibition – Trish Woods

About Trish Woods:

I started my artistic career when living for a few years in South Australia. By chance I met an artist on the beach who encouraged me to attend workshops in a nearby Community Centre and I was very soon totally hooked and delighted not only with what I was putting onto canvas but also how my eyes were more fully opened to the world around me.

Since moving to NZ a few years ago I have loved the contrasts between the landscape and wildlife of both countries. The brash, bright colours of Australia and the beautiful more mellow colours of NZ set against the various backdrops of the sea, the mountains, the rivers and the land. They are all daily inspiration to me.

I have called this collection of my work Nature, Nurture and Altered Visions. Whilst the nature and nurture aspects are obvious, the altered visions are those where I have changed the colours around to the contrasting colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel. Here, instead of blue, the sky becomes orange, the grass pale with blue and purple shadows. In two paintings I have instead applied very vivid colours: Electric Mangroves seen growing in the sea viewed from a Darwin beach, and St Andrews Cathedral where I have applied strong, vivid colours against the more sober colouring of the cathedral ruins. I found this fa fascinating concept.

Living in New Zealand I am drawn to the native bush and the mountains, the diversity of landscape, the sea and the wildlife. I am never at a loss of what to paint next and always have a mental list in my head of my next project.
